The Challenge
Most mental wellness apps do one thing well and stop there — a journal with no mood context, a meditation timer with no reflection, or a mood tracker with nowhere to write. People needed a single calm space that connects writing, stillness, mood, and self-insight without clinical framing or pressure.
The Solution
MindLeau is a privacy-first iOS and Android app that brings four gentle practices together: a distraction-free brain dump journal, guided stillness sessions, quick daily mood reflection, and personal insights that tie it all together.
Brain Dump Journal
- No formatting pressure, no word count, no judgment — just a free-writing space
- Each entry gets a mood tag and focus rating for searchable reflection history
- Built for anxiety journaling, morning brain dumps, and clearing mental clutter
Guided Stillness Sessions
- 5–15 minute expert-designed sessions covering breathwork, body awareness, and stillness
- Work fully offline — no Wi-Fi needed
- Streak-based to build a daily calming ritual
Mood Reflection
- Under-60-second morning or evening check-ins
- Tags what influenced each mood and connects it to journal entries and sessions
- A gentle self-awareness practice, not a clinical mood tracker
Personal Insights
- 30-day mental weather heatmap visualizing mood history at a glance
- Streak data and growth metrics that show progress without pressure
Private by Design
- Local-first — journal and mood data live on the device
- Limited ads, never shared with advertisers
- Optional encrypted sync if an account is created
- Instant data deletion from Settings — no waiting, no emails
Tech Stack
- Flutter for iOS and Android from one codebase
- Drift (typed SQLite) as the on-device source of truth
- Firebase Auth + Cloud Firestore for optional background sync
- provider + ChangeNotifier / ValueNotifier for state. No Riverpod, no Bloc: the app is small enough that it didn't need them
Decisions & Trade-offs
- On-device database as the source of truth. Journal and mood data are written to Drift (SQLite) first, so the app works offline and stays private by default. The trade-off: sync becomes a separate, harder problem instead of something the backend gives you for free.
- Accounts and sync are optional. Firebase Auth and Firestore only come into play if someone creates an account. Nobody is forced to sign up to write, but people who skip an account need to know their data lives on one device.
- Simple state management on purpose. provider with ChangeNotifier and ValueNotifier instead of Riverpod or Bloc. The app is small enough that extra architecture would have cost more than it saved.
- Ads kept out of the writing flow. Monetization had to fit a calm product, so ads are limited and never interrupt a journal entry.
Next Steps
- 📌 Expand guided session library with more themes
- 📌 Richer insight visualizations across longer time ranges
